The homeowners are a busy, professional couple who love to entertain in their home, frequently treating family and friends to extravagant feasts. They are passionate about cooking, travel, architecture and the arts. Unfortunately, the existing kitchen was impractical and too dark and ‘heavy’ looking for the owners’ tastes so it was decided a new kitchen was required.
The brief for the new design included increased storage, more bench space, upgraded appliances, clean straight lines and neutral tones. So the designer’s aim was to create a more open space with a better flow through to the living area, to look at how work zones could be concealed from the dining area, to increase the surface area of the countertops and to source appliances that suited the clients’ varied cooking styles.
Working with a neutral colour palette allowed the kitchen to blend in with the rusty red autumnal tones of the adjacent living and dining spaces and created a backdrop for the owners to display items to personalise the space. The splashbacks feature a stunning Matrix tile in soft brown earthy hues which tones superbly with the rusty red autumnal colours and rich textures in the surrounding spaces. Whilst the cabinetry in Laminex ‘Moleskin’ with stainless steel rail handles along with the stunning bench tops featuring a classic waterfall end in Quantum Quartz ‘New Diamond White’ soften the palette to the desired neutral tones.
Two simple black glass and chrome pendant lights were hung above creating a pleasant foil for the neutral tones of the kitchen but blending well with the stainless steel sink below. The peninsula bench houses a concealed microwave oven, a semi-integrated dishwasher and superbly appointed drawers with internal organisation capable of housing crockery and cutlery with pantry staples stored in the adjacent drawers situated at the far end of this bench run.
Light was increased into the space by removing the overheads above the old sink, installing pendant lights above the peninsula bench and installing LED down lights.
